Abstract
Handbook of Molecular Spectroscopy: From Radio Waves to Gamma Rays, published by IK International Publishing House Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi is an authoritative and well brought reference book on the subject written by India’s leading expert and exponent of Molecular Spectroscopy, Prof. D.N. Sathyanarayana. The book will be useful to students of Chemistry, Physics, Life Sciences, Environmental Science and Geology who require an understanding of molecular spectroscopic techniques and their applications in the elucidation of molecular structure.
Starting from the fundamentals of electromagnetic spectrum, interaction between radiation, molecular and group symmetry, the author goes on to explain in a simple and lucid language the intricacies of the different optical spectroscopic techniques – electronic, IR, Raman, atomic and fluorescence. Each chapter starts with an introduction to the technique followed by a detailed discussion of the theory, instrumentation and applications. Relevant examples have been included to supplement theory. At the end of each chapter, a number of problems have been given for the reader to solve. The material given for further study will motivate the reader to delve deeper into the subject.
The book discusses the principles of NMR, ESR, Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectroscopy and Mass Spectroscopy and brings out the salient features of these rather difficult to understand techniques. The author has discussed several NMR spectra and many more have been included for self study. The four appendices given at the end of the book will be very useful to the readers.
Latest information has been included in each chapter. The layout of the book is excellent. I am sure the book will be well received by the academic and scientific community and students will be immensely benefitted by referring it for their Molecular Spectroscopy studies.
