Copper(II) Complex of 2-Hydroxy-4-oxyacetate-benzoic Acid: Synthesis, Structure and Photoluminescence

Abstract
A novel copper(II) complex (1) Cu(L)·(phen)2·10H2O was synthesized from 2-hydroxy-4-oxyacetate-benzoic acid (HL), phenanthroline (phen) and Cu(NO3)2·2.5H2O and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and X-ray crystallographically. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies demonstrated that complex is crystallize in triclinic system, space group P1, with a = 0.9177(6) nm, b = 1.5123(5) nm, c = 1.5753(3) nm, a = 62.263º, b = 77.639º, g = 80.098º, V = 1.883(7) nm3, Z = 2, Mr = 814.25, F(000) = 850.0, Dc = 1.436 g·cm-3, μ (M0Ka) = 0.675 mm-1. It turned out that four N atoms and one carboxyl O atom coordinate to Cu(II), forming a five-coordination trigonal bipyramid geometry. The complex is luminescent in the solid state, which indicate that it may be an excellent candidate for potential photoactive material. CCDC: 883096.
