Abstract
Corrosion inhibition by Zn2+, 4-phosphonobutyric acid (4-PBA) and two new benzotriazole derivatives namely 1-(2-pyrrolecarbonyl)-benzotriazole and 1-(2-thienylcarbonyl)benzotriazole on mild steel in aqueous media has been investigated by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Further characterization using XRD and SEM demonstrates the adsorption of inhibitor and the formation of corrosion products on the mild steel surface, respectively. Combination of 1-(2-pyrrolecarbonyl)benzotriazole and 1-(2-thienylcarbonyl)benzotriazole along with Zn2+ and 4-phosphonobutyric acid shows better corrosion inhibition efficiency than other inhibitor combinations and the individual inhibitors.
