Removal of Methylene Blue from Synthytic Waste Water by Coconut Husk Fiber Based-Activated Carbon

Abstract
The adsorption of methylene blue on activated carbon fiber and granular activated carbon was studied in a batch system. The effects of initial concentration, agitation time, solution pH and temperature were examined. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied to investigate adsorption isotherms. It was found that, the Langmuir model fits well with the experimental data in the case of activated carbon fiber, whereas both models fit the experimental data for adsorption of methylene blue on granulated activated carbons. The pseudo first-order, second-order and intra-particle diffusion models were used to examine the kinetics data. The results obtained showed that empirical kinetics data of both activated carbon fiber and granulated activated carbons were only well described by the second-order model. It was observed that the granulated activated carbons has adsorption performance higher than that of activated carbon fiber. Adsorption thermodynamics parameters were investigated and their values indicated that the adsorption of methylene blue on activated carbon fiber and granulated activated carbons were endothermic and spontaneous processes.
