Abstract
The rates of alkaline solvolysis of 3-chloropropionate ion in watermethanol and in water-isopropanol mixtures have been measured over the temperature range 25–55ºC. In all cases the rates were first order with respect to both the 3-chloropropionate ion and the total solvoxide ion concentrations. The addition of alcohols to water first causes an increase of rate to a maximum at about 0.8 water mole fraction in the water-methanol solutions and at 0.5 water mole fraction in the waterisopropanol solvent mixtures. Then the rate is decreased on further alcohol addition. The activation parameters Ea , ΔH# and ΔS# show extremum behaviours in each one of the binary solvent mixtures. The results are briefly discussed.
