Abstract
The action of strong acids such as perchloric acid, hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid on several arylhydrazones (prepared by coupling aryldiazonium salts with diethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and cyanoacetic ethyl ester) has been studied. It has been found that even under a variety of reaction conditions hydrolysis of diethyl mesoxalate phenylhydrazones proceeds only up to the half ester stage whereas that of ethyl-2,3-diaxo-2-(phenylhydrazono) butyrate yields the corresponding keto acid. Ethyl cyano-(arylhydrazono) acetates resist such hydrolysis.
