Abstract
Fructose on oxidation with neutral permanganate yields a number of products which leads one to conclude that C5, C2 and C1 compounds are produced. Fructose undergoes both terminal group oxidation and C–C cleavage. Formation of formaldehyde indicates the oxidation fission of the C1–C2 bond by OH radical.
