Abstract
Phthalic anhydride has been converted to its monoesters by reaction with simple alcohols under a variety of conditions. The monoesters are each transformed into the corresponding diesters by reaction with alcohols under acid-catalysed dehydrating conditions. Phthalic anhydride on
hydrolysis yields phthalic acid which with alcohols either directly or
through the intermediacy of O-phthaloyl chloride has been transformed
into the diesters.
